Coffee and Culture
About the Course:
Welcome to the Coffee Decal! We hope you are as excited and passionate about coffee as we are and enjoy this course which explores every aspect behind this truly amazing beverage. First, we will develop a good background on coffee including its origins, history, and role in trade. From there we will learn about the cultivation and roasting process to understand where coffee comes from and why it is grown in certain regions of the world. Then we will explore the science behind caffeine and coffee, to show why coffee is such a popular drink. Next, we will discuss the differences and similarities between Italian/Western World, South American, and African coffee cultures. There will be a showing of “Black Gold” a documentary that will introduce the topic of fair trade, and we will continue this discussion on coffee and the global market for a couple of lectures. We will end with a lecture on coffee and sustainability and what the future holds for coffee lovers around the world.
By the end of this course, each student will be more aware that a “cup of Joe” is made up of more than just cream and sugar. Students will understand how coffee impacts lives on social, economical, political, cultural and scientific level. We hope students will be more socially conscious coffee consumers, and appreciate the art of coffee.
