About the Course:

From Del the Funky Homosapien to Dilated Peoples, this class will explore how the poetic nature of independent record label artists primarily from Los Angeles at the turn of the century reinvented Hip Hop music and culture. By Focusing on lyrics, we will identify how conventional techniques of poetry such as rhyme and meter were modified to produce a more creative, positive, and intellectually driven community of artists.  Furthermore, we will look at how overlapping themes among artists worked in dialogue with prevailing forms of Hip Hop/Rap and popular ideology.

Students will be required to submit three one page assignments that will function as critical reflections ranging anywhere from the language to the social significance of the music.  Weekly bSpace postings in response to songs of the week will also be required of students.  Students will also be divided into groups that will be responsible for addressing at least one artist/group and their respective theme.

All music will be made available on bSpace via links to YouTube.  Supplemental readings such as critical academic essays on poetry and music will also be made available on bSpace.
