HIKE: Health Information in Kids' Education
About the Course:
The main focus of this course is to involve undergraduates in an outreach program that aims as spreading health awareness among elementary school children, in regards to eating healthy, personal hygiene, dental health, physical health, food prevention, and various other health related topics. The curriculum for the Decal course will be divided into three sections: Preparing lesson plans to be taught, delivering lesson plans at Emerson Elementary School, and exploring these topics through hands on activities.
Each week, students will be meeting in a classroom to prepare lesson plans for the elementary school which students will present the following week. At the first class meeting, we will brainstorm the different health topics that we will teach the students. The following week we will pass out an updated syllabus. We will brainstorm effective ways to help the children learn different topics each week that will help them stay healthy. After the lesson plans are complete, we will walk to Emerson Elementary School to present the lesson plans. The brainstorming and presentations will occur during the two-hour time slot, yet outside preparation and the completion of the various assignments is also required.
Grading will be based on attendance, participation (including delivering the material at Emerson, active collaboration with the children, active involvement with lesson planning during class) and upon timely completion of the 4 short assignments.
