About the Course:
Ernest Hemingway: It's almost impossible to separate his writing from the mythos around him. Depending on whom you ask, the man was a drunk, a genius, a misogynist, or a fraud. The truth? Probably some combination of all of the above, but you'll have to take the class to find out.
This class will be a light-hearted, discussion-based overview of Hemingway's life, works, and legacy. We will examine the themes that pervade his works by reading a variety of his short stories, along with excerpts from several of his novels and from other writers as well. Each week we will focus on a different topic of his writing, from war to alcohol to expatriate culture.
This class is aimed both at those already familiar with Hemingway's works and at those who have never read or even heard of him before. We also hope for a wide spectrum of people in this class, from English majors to people who rarely or never get to read fiction for their classes. That means you, Math and Science majors!
The expectations for this class will be as follows: 20-40 pages of reading a week, participation in class discussion, two 1-2 page response papers, and a small group creative presentation/discussion facilitation at some point during the semester.
Students may miss no more than 1 class without permission, though exceptions will be made for emergencies, midterms, and so on.
Any questions? Email one of us and we'll be glad to answer!
How to Enroll:
The first class meeting will be held at 6:30 PM on September 6th in 106 Wheeler Hall. If the number of people who show up is less than our limit (around 30 people) we will simply distribute the CCNs there. If there are more people than we can admit into the class, we'll email out a short survey form to all those interested, asking the following:
1. Name
2. Major
3. Previous experience with Hemingway
4. Reasons for wanting to take the course.
We're looking for a wide range of people and viewpoints for this class, so if you've never read Hemingway before or aren't that experienced in the literary field, fear not! Your chances will not be adversely affected by that.
