About the Course:
This DeCal course is a foundational study on Vinyasa Yoga with a focus on healthy physical alignment. It draws from various Somatic principles including Energetic alignment and the Bartenieff Fundamentals to better explain the energy dynamics in the poses and sequences. Other focuses of the class include working towards total body connectivity, cultivating a home practice, practicing mindfulness, deepening body/self-awareness, and practicing being more present in our lives. The class meets two hours a week, with additional two hours of homework per week. The class begins as a traditional Vinyasa Flow practice, much like what one would experience at a typical yoga studio. About midway into the class I slow the pace and break down specific set of poses and sequences in greater detail. Afterwards, the class transitions back into the flow with the intent of integrating the new material. The class ends with svanasana, and a closing Om. A few weeks will be devoted to exploring other forms of Yoga, including Restorative and Yin Yoga. This class is open to all levels and is great for actors, dancers, and performers who want grater access, awareness, and fuller expression of their bodies. Moreover, for non-performers, it will provide a nice de-stressing compliment to their often hectic, Berkeley academic life.
