About the Course:

We’ve all heard the stories, the myths, and the statistics. We’ve looked for the tiniest bear on South Hall, tried in vain to count how many “NL” parking spaces there are on campus, and chanted “Roll on you Bears!” at Memorial Stadium. We’ve rolled down 4.0 Hill, taken a nap on Memorial Glade, and taken an even longer nap in the Stacks during finals week. Since the minute we first stepped foot on this campus, we’ve been made not to forgot how prolific, prestigious, and wonderful Cal truly is. The purpose of this course is to expand on what you already know by teaching you about the rich history of the University from its founding in 1868 to the present. We will also be learning about the development of campus culture, songs, legends, iconography, and lore, as well as how and why these traditions have changed over time. In addition, we will discuss Cal’s contributions to the political, scientific, and educational world at large. Our hope is that by the end of this course, you will come to love and appreciate Cal more than ever before.

This course will last for fifteen weeks, with one hour of lecture each week. Each week we will be learning about a different aspect of the university. The majority of classes will include a lecture from an expert in the field, including professors, faculty, staff, and alumni. Additionally, students will be expected to complete all required readings (provided in a course reader), take one in-class midterm, and write a short final paper.
