About the Course:

Please read the following carefully:

This class is a chronological survey of Bollywood film from 1950 to present. In addition to viewing films, we will provide students with an overview of the political, historical, and cultural trends that are reflected by the industry. Above all, our goal is to instill a deeper appreciation and understanding of this entirely unique film experience.

We will be screening 14-15 films throughout this semester. Films to be shown (subject to change): Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Mother India (1957), Bobby (1973), Sholay (1975), Deewar (1975), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Bombay (1995), Dil se…(1998), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khush Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Black (2005).

Regular attendance in film-screenings is required, as is active participation in discussion. If you anticipate missing a film-screening, you must 1) e-mail the course facilitators in advance and 2) view the film on your own time at the Media Resources Center in Moffitt within a week. (These films can be quite lengthy, so plan accordingly.) and 3) Write a short response on the film. More than one unexcused absence will result in an immediate No Pass for the course.

There will be short mandatory readings for this course.
