Overview:

This course is a general survey of issues revolving around tobacco. Tobacco has been a very large part of human society for much longer than most people realize, and its impacts are widespread in various areas. This course will provide information about these topics as well as experience in the field. The course will start with historical use of tobacco as well as its ethno-medical impact. Then the course will steer toward the rise of the industry and its impacts on the university itself. After this, we will discuss health consequences and detriments of different tobacco use – such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, snus, chew, and hookahs. We will also view the evolution of tobacco products and the implications it has on society. Finally, we will comment on tobacco’s impact on society itself, in terms of ethno-racial bias and targeting.
