About the Course:

The Jade Ribbon Campaign to prevent and fight hepatitis B (HBV) and liver cancer was launched in the San Francisco Bay Area in May 2001, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The objective of the campaign is to increase awareness and provide ethnic-sensitive health information to the API community and health professionals in an effort to reduce this major health disparity and improve API health. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects approximately 10% of Asians and Asian-Americans. HBV is the major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, and is one of the greatest health disparities facing Asian communities worldwide.

Established Spring 2005, the Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal course seeks to carry out the mission of the Jade Ribbon Campaign. In association with Team HBV at UC Berkeley, the first collegiate student organization dedicated to community outreach, education, and advocacy for HBV and liver cancer prevention and control, the Jade Ribbon Campaign Decal course provides class participants with opportunities to understand hepatitis B issues, learn from experts about how to market a public health campaign, and gain real-world outreach experiences through planning and implementing their own outreach projects that will improve awareness about these health issues on the UC Berkeley campus and surrounding community. Students are encouraged to join Team HBV before, during, or after taking the DeCal to continue to promote the Jade Ribbon Campaign (Team HBV meetings are held TBD semester).
