Sustainable Developments in Global South
About the Course:
In last semester’s DeCal, students developed several plans of actions to combat various challenges in rural Guatemala, such as efficient farming against malnutrition and slow sand water filtration. Last summer, students traveled to Guatemala and executed the plans. This semester, we will revisit the trip to Guatemala and learn from the experience through surveys, interview clips, pictures, and personal experiences from students.
One of the two major messages that we wish to deliver to our fellow students is that the planning process should be thorough and have the community to evaluate before we start executing. We will also be reading and analyzing the benefits and controversies of other projects from different parts of the world, such as that from the World Bank, IMF, and grass root NGOs.
Another message that we wish the group to understand is the practice of partnership with other organizations. We will be inviting representatives from other organizations to collaborate and exchange ideas with each other.
The ultimate goal of this course is to make sure that the projects that we are bringing to Guatemala is well constructed, widely approved by the local residents, and actively involved with other organizations.
