About the Course:

“What’s so special about Harry Potter?” you ask yourself. You’ve seen the movies, but never read the books. Or you’ve never been interested in Harry Potter at all, but want to know why it’s such a big deal. Whatever your ideas about Harry Potter are, if you’re even a tiny bit interested in learning about J.K. Rowling’s boy-wizard and the vast Wizarding world, this course is for you.

In this course, we will study topics, themes, and issues brought about by the Harry Potter series. Most importantly, we will compare the teachings and practice of magic in the Wizarding world to education in our world. Along with this, we will introduce you to the Harry Potter fandom—a world that includes wizard rock, a theme park, chocolate frogs and pencil shavings-flavored jellybeans, and about two million or so fan fiction stories. (Please see the syllabus for a full course description.)

Note: We will read all seven Harry Potter novels, along with a few outside readings, in this class. (Don’t worry—these books go by fast!) Although this course is open for everyone (from Harry Potter fanatics to "newbies"), we recommend it for those who haven’t read or completed the Harry Potter series. For those who have read the series and wish to read more, we direct you to our sister course, Bookworlds: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Analysis (where you will read and discuss articles and essays about Harry Potter).

Please pay careful attention to the enrollment directions below. Get ready—the Hogwarts Express leaves August 31st!
