About the Course:
This course examines the evolution of the vampire as a cultural icon from a socio-cultural standpoint. We will consider the purpose of the figure of the vampire in modern society, and attempt to understand why this figure has changed over time. We will study early vampire myths, the original Dracula, the vampire as a victim in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, vampires as heroes in Blade, human idolization of vampires, the morality of the immortal in Anne Rice, the vampire in other media, the clash between vampires and werewolves, and the modern vampires of True Blood, Twilight, and Vampire Diaries. Through discussion and study of texts (written and film), we will hope to understand the cultural phenomena of the vampire.
Grading Breakdown:
Attendance/Participation: 25%
Reading Responses: 35%
Final Project: 40%
This class is based on discussion, so being familiar with the material and sharing your thoughts on the subject matter is essential. We want the course to be interesting and fun while also making students think about the vampire as a cultural figure and the vampire's role in our modern world.
