About the Course:

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the burgeoning contemporary Israeli film industry by viewing a number of recent films that depict various facets of Israeli society and culture, ranging from Israel's diverse composition and immigration policy to the everyday lives of modern Israeli families and teenagers.  This course consists of a three-hour session per week.  We will have a discussion following the screening of each movie.

Our purpose is not to espouse any specific political views, and those views shown in movies we screen do not necessarily reflect our own.  Israeli movies often contain issues that are controversial by nature; the films we will be watching represent a range of views.  In addition, these films do not shy away from mature themes, so maturity and openness are encouraged.

Assignments

There will be short response writing assignments throughout the course, as well as one larger written assignment to be completed towards the end of the semester. There will also be some brief supplementary readings for background information and insight.

Attendance

Students will not be penalized for missing up to two class meetings.  Students who miss more than two sessions will receive a “no pass” grade. If students must miss a class due to unforeseen circumstances, they must email the course facilitators with an explanation.  Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each meeting.
