About the Course:

Hello Students!

My name is Wesley Woo, and I'll be teaching a decal course on popular music harmony and basic guitar techniques with Kyle Vanek and Chance Tseng this coming Fall 2010 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5PM.  All three of use are graduating Music Majors now entering our fifth year (yes I know, I'm a super senior) at UC Berkeley.  The course will be primarily about the harmonies and chord progressions used in popular music, using basic guitar techniques to help supplement an understanding of these harmonies.  Hopefully, you should take this class expecting to learn not just how to play the guitar, but how to write chord progressions that will help you write your own music as well.  Although it is best if you already have at least some rudimentary understanding of the guitar and/or the piano, we encourage everyone to come to the first day of class where we'll better explain the basic requirements that are necessary to take this class.

For the midterm and the final, you will be divided into groups, and asked to write your own pop song, using chord progressions that you can justify using the chord theories that we'll be teaching you.  In addition, you will also be assigned listening quizes throughout the semester which will test you on the music that we'll be studying (don't be intimidated; we promise it'll be music that you like).  Please be sure to email me any time if you have any questions, or would like to see the (rudimentary) syllabus for the course.

thanks!

How to Enroll:

Announcement: Hello All,

CCNs have already been emailed out to the 25 students who came on the first day that we felt had the most qualified level of theory knowledge for the class, so unfortunately we cannot accept any more students.

Also, some of you have asked to be waitlisted for the class.  I don't know if there is a way to create a waitlist for the class, but we would have to offer these waitlist seats to the 75 other students who did come to the first day of class.
