About the Course:
We will be looking at various current and past engineering projects for the developing world with a focus on the social and cultural needs of various communities and how this must translated into product design requirements. This is an interdisciplinary course and requires no previous knowledge of bioengineering or other engineering fields.
Facilitators will lead classes that consist of interactive lectures, activities, and discussions roughly every other week. These classes will be interspersed with guest lectures about specific projects relating to the topics discussed. There will also be a session where students will be able to assemble biomedical devices for developing world hospitals.
There will be short readings assigned approximately every other week that will form the basis of class discussions. Course grades are based on demonstrated completion of the reading through class participation and attendance (students will not pass the class if they miss more than 2 classes).
