About the Course:
Stem cell research, cloning, longevity research, and bioengineering have become some of the most hotly debated topics in recent years. Many believe the cures to most diseases lie in such research, while others cringe at the thought of a world where biotechnology has run amok. This class will take you on an eye-opening and tech-savvy journey deep inside the stem cell and biotech revolution, revealing the scientists, philosophers, and advocates at the forefront of their controversial fields. At the same time, you will also be challenged to think about the social, political, and even spiritual implications of this uncharted scientific frontier.
As a result of this course, you will have a basic understanding of the science behind stem cell research, its applications and potential, and its social implications. We hope you will have enough knowledge on this subject to be able to, during and after your completion of this course, understand and participate in stem cell activities on campus and be informed about the political stances surrounding this developing field.
How to Enroll:
This semester, we are offering an opportunity to learn more about the politics behind stem cell research.
In addition to taking the “normal” decal class (which includes attending one of the five regular discussion sections), you will ALSO attend an additional section focusing on human genetic technology policy. You will actually get to influence stem cell policy by providing input to a policy organization called the “Interactivity Foundation.”
If you would like to take this extra “policy” section in addition to the regular lecture and discussion section, you will need a different CCN and CEC in order to enroll. For your extra work, you will receive 3 units.
If you are interested please email Mark Averell at medwardaverell@berkeley.edu or indicate during the first lecture meeting that you’d like to apply.
Other important information:
Please make sure to sign up for the correct course under telebears—there is both a 98 (fresh, soph) section and a 198 section (jr, sr). CCNs are already posted, and those receiving 2 units for this class do not need a CEC number.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DISCUSSION SECTION:
After enrolling in this decal on telebears, you can sign up for a discussion time on bspace. You will also have the opportunity to switch sections at any time on bspace.
If you cannot make one of the five discussion section times listed (all except Mark’s Section, which is for the students taking 3 units), please do not enroll in this course.
