About the Course:


To discuss in a collaborative setting the sociological and philosophical interpretations and implications of one of the most influential hip hop albums of our time, Illmatic.  All of the prominent motifs, themes, and symbols of album will be analyzed at a micro and macro level through discussion, close readings of the lyrics, and breakdown of the organization and production.  Finally, the impact of Illmatic on the entire hip-hop genre and culture will be addressed in conclusion.

Assignments and Grading:

Participation/Attendance: 20%

Readings, homework, and quizzes: 20%

Response Papers: 20%

Final Paper: 40%
