About the Course:
Relay For Life is the world’s largest fundraising walk. It is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser and is hosted in 19 countries including Brazil, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Malaysia, and South Africa. The American Cancer Society, with its focus on research, education, advocacy, and patient services, is highly reputable and recognized worldwide for its efforts to eliminate cancer and provide a better quality of living for cancer patients. UC Berkeley held its first Relay for Life in 2003, and last year we raised more than $75,000. This spring, Relay will be on Saturday, 1st May, 2010 at Edward's Stadium (date subject to change). We are aiming to gather 1,200 participants and raise more than $80,000 to celebrate life and fight back against this deadly disease. Most of the course will focus on the planning of Relay For Life. Every student will be placed on a committee (they include; Entertainment, Sponsorship, Food, Cancer Education, Luminaria, Team Recruitment, Publicity, or Survivorship). We would love to have people that have participated in Relay before in college or high school as well as people who have never been involved. The course will also have speakers (oncologists, researchers, and cancer survivors) who will discuss their work in helping eradicate cancer.
All we ask if that you attend class, do a small amount of outside class work for your committee, and a 5 minute group presentation on one cancer topic.
How to Enroll:
You must attend the first class section (Jan 20) in order to receive an application. The second class section is also required in order to remain in the class and receive a CEC to enroll. We are looking for dedicated people who care about the cause and want to be a leader in the HOPE that one day cancer will be eliminated.
