About the Course:

This course will help students expand their imagination through Miyazaki’s world. The active imagination will serve as the underlying inspiration for composing creative fiction. Each week, students will discuss Miyazaki’s symbols and motifs throughout his films and use them as the central theme for their creative fiction. These themes will be explored in depth during lecture and may include (but are not limited to): ideas about gender roles, the use of light in film and written text, modern and classical tales and their incorporation into Miyazaki’s work, animals, water, the environment, children’s rights, and the sanctity of life and love. There will be a screening each week ranging from short films to full feature films. Students will sharpen their creative writing skills through the interaction with one another and their own personal encounter with Miyazaki’s world.  

 Although there will be a screening each week, students will only be required to attend a total of 3 screenings during the semester. Lecture attendance is mandatory on Thursday nights.

How to Enroll:

In order to enroll in the course, please download and fill out a brief application located at the bottom of this page. The application will include short answer questions about the prospective student's interests in Miyazaki's films and creative writing.

After the applications have been received and reviewed, either Sasha or Rose will contact the student with the CCN - and then let the fun begin!
