About the Course:

We’ve all seen him: that guy at the party with the sideways hat, aviator sunglasses, beer, and cocky grin; the ‘Bro.’ But where does this figure come from?  How does he operate in popular culture, and why God why would someone act like a ‘Bro’?  These are the questions we will be answering as we explore the figure of the ‘Bro’ as a manifestation of modern masculine identity.

In this course we will ground our inspection of the ‘Bro’ in basic theory. We will move on to examine specific occurrences of the ‘Bro’ in modern culture using literature, film and other texts. By the end of this course you will have gained a broader understanding of the ‘Bro’ as well as have gained experience in the application of critical thought and analysis. So the next time you see that cavalier, beer-chugging figure strutting his stuff at a party, you will have a better understanding of what it is that makes him tick.

How to Enroll:

Come to the first day of class, Thursday September 3, and we will do our best to get you in!  Class size is limited to 25.
