Fall 2009
2 Unit(s)

About the Course:

This course is recommended for continuing reporters at the Daily Californian, but is open to interested students outside the Daily Cal as well. A resume and 2-3 news clips should be sent to by Friday, September 11.

A different part of investigative reporting will be covered in class each week, drawing on the knowledge of local media professionals. We will invite representatives from the Center for Investigative Reporting, professors from the Graduate School of Journalism and local journalists. Students will discuss how to obtain public documents and use archives.

The course will be taught as a seminar, encouraging group discussion and feedback on the progress of investigative projects. Throughout the semester students will work to create three in-depth articles and supporting multimedia elements, to be printed in the paper. These packages will demonstrate considerable knowledge of the issue investigated and show advanced reporting skills.

The course will be facilitated by Rachel Gross and Jessica Kwong, former news editors for the Daily Californian.

Class may not meet every week, but meetings will be scheduled on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m.
