Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing Workshop
About the Course:
This is an introduction to writing a fantasy or science fiction short story. We will go over conventions of short fiction, in addition to those characteristic of this genre. We will also briefly explore the history and evolution of this genre and various sub-genres (i.e. quest fantasy, urban fantasy, space opera, steampunk).
The expected learning outcomes of this class are that the participants will gain a better understanding of science fiction and fantasy within a historical context; produce their own short story within the genre (a first and second draft) and learn how to function within a writers’ workshop.
How to Enroll:
Please submit 5 pages of fiction writing to sff.decal@gmail.com. If you do not already have a finished story, please write a 300-1,000 word fiction exercise for evaluation. We would prefer that the short be polished and related to science fiction or fantasy. If you’re having trouble, try this prompt: a character (wizard, time traveler, elf) is trying to hide a murder weapon (wand, hatchet, pet wolf). They either do or distinctly do not succeed.
Applications due no later than Friday, August 28th at 11:59pm.
We will send out acceptances and a waitlist (if needed) by Sunday noon (August 30th) before our first class (Monday, August 31st).
