About the Course:
Bollywood is the world’s largest film industry, coming out with hundreds of films every year and showcasing different aspects of Indian culture to audiences across the globe. From extravagant musicals to melodramatic love stories, Bollywood has captured the hearts of millions of ardent fans and established a cult following. In this course, we will watch films from different time periods of Indian cinema to examine the transformation of these films into modernity. Through this course, we hope students will gain a deeper understanding of the elements of Bollywood cinema and the culture in which they exist.
Attendance is mandatory, and a significant portion of the final grade. No more than two unexcused absences are allowed—any more will result in an automatic No Pass, no exceptions. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of each class. Please email one of the facilitators if you have a conflict. If you are need of any special accommodations, please let us know as soon as possible.
In addition to attendance, students will be expected to take weekly quizzes on the previous week’s movie, complete written assignments, and engage in discussion on the themes of the specific week. Students do not need to have any previous knowledge of Bollywood, and all films will have English subtitles.
Students wishing to take this class for 1 unit will be required to complete a final project, with a choice between a 4-6 minute group video project/presentation where students will create their own film reflecting the themes covered in class, OR a 4 page paper to be done individually on the course. Students wishing to take this class for 2 units must complete the 5-7 minute video/presentation AND a three page paper on the themes of the course.
Plagiarism on any assignment will not be tolerated, and any student caught doing so will receive an immediate No Pass and be reported to the University and be dealt with accordingly.
