About the Course:
Do you derive a strange sort of pleasure, a perverse sort of edification, or any sort of invigoration of mind, soul, or body part when engaging yourself with the most ghastly, strange, horrific, and chilling works of art and literature? Then congratulations! You’re a horror fan!The goal of this course is to provide the hoity-toitiest (tea, cakes, and pinkies raised) of forums for the discussion of the art, substance, and pleasures of the horror genre. This semester the curriculum will focus on the reading and appreciation of the antiquated, arcane joys of 19th to mid-20th century "weird" literature.
The material will be mostly short stories, so weekly readings should be short and hopefully sweet. Leisure is encouraged.
The tentative curriculum will look at the short works of H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, Henry James, Ambrose Bierce, Guy de Maupassant, Walter De La Mare, and Shirley Jackson. We will discuss other authors as well, like Charles Dickens, Angela Carter, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
We will also be looking at the horror films inspired by or directly adapted from the work of these authors.
Course grading will consist of participation and attendance, writing occasional response papers, and one final term project.
