About the Course:
Offered through the Cal Archery Club, this course provides a fun and challenging experience. As part of our Team Development Plan, the class takes you from basic technique to competitive shooting with fun discussions and games too!A majority of the time is spent at our archery field (the Golden Bear Softball Field at Clark Kerr) with several classroom sessions interspersed. The course syllabus below contains a detailed outline.
Location: Golden Bear Softball Field. Located right next to Clark Kerr just walk up Dwight Way. As you head up the hill, Clark Kerr will pass on the right. Just before the field (also on the right) stairs will lead down to a parking lot. At the end of the lot another set of stairs will lead up to the field.

How to Enroll:
1/26/09
We are now accepting applications! Please continue reading to find out more!
Introduction
It is our goal to give all students enrolled at Cal an opportunity to partake in Olympic-Style Recurve Archery. Throughout this course, we will focus on shooting safely, shooting consistently, and, last but not least, shooting passionately. This semester, we will focus more heavily on team dynamics and group identity than we have in the past, however we will retain many familiar components of the previous Archery DECals. This class will evaluate your performance based on weekly homework assignments, written tests and quizzes, and attendance. If attendance is an issue due to scheduling conflicts, please reconsider your enrollment in this class because there is very little we can do to accommodate. As always, we are willing to accommodate students' needs if they are emergencies.
Enrollment
In order to enroll and receive credit for this course, you must participate in an application process. Applications will be reviewed by our staff, and CCN's will be sent to those students who we accept. We will only deny students students enrollment if there is more demand than the number of available seats. Students who have entered the CCN into telebears but are not recognized on our roster of students who have passed the application process will receive a NOT PASS if they do not drop themselves. Please note that there is a University approved course fee for this class. Please check http://decal.org/archery for more information.
Application Process
The application will be available at this link http://archery.berkeley.edu/decalapplication09.htm It will be available online beginning January 26th and will remain open until the end of the month. The application process will make itself unavailable starting February 1st, 12:00 am. Results of the application process should be ready by February 3rd.
DECal and Club
A modification in this year's DECal is the separation between our course and the Cal Archery sports club. An understanding of these differences may help you decide if this course is right for you.
| DECal | Club | |
| Fees | $10 payable to UC REGENTS through the ME Department | Required RSF membership plus $40 club fee per semester** |
| Amount of practice | 1 session per week; mandatory | Usually 3 sessions per week; not mandatory |
| Instruction | Dedicated instructors; set curriculum | Available club members are willing to help and answer questions |
| Benefits | 2 units of P/NP credit through the ME department | Permission to participate in club events and tournaments |
**Although the club fee is $40/semester, registered Archery DECal students can request a $10 dollar discount with regards to club membership. Contact a facilitator for more information.

For all of you who are interested in the Spring 09 Archery DECal, class sign ups will be held BEFORE February 6th. There will be multiple info sessions within the next two weeks in which we will be discussing class sign ups, course material, and orienting everyone before the first day of class. While attending an info session is not mandatory, we will be discussing the application and enrollment process at length. Please check this website frequently for more information about the exact time and location of these sessions.
Thank-you all for your patience.

Unfortunately, the Clark Kerr Softball Field will be closed for field maintenance until February 16th. Since this is where classes are usually held, the first day of class will be postponed until the week of February 16th. In order to enroll, please come to the first day of class, which will be announced when we receive word of the field times. The CCN's will be handed out to those who attend the first class.
Do not be confused with the decal classes listed on schedule.berkeley.edu because the listed times (Th 6-8 and Sat 1-3) were carried over from last semester and don't reflect the actual class times this semester. As mentioned before, the new CCN's will be provided on the first day of class.

FAQ's:
Q: Do I need any classes or experience before joining this Decal course?
A: Absolutely not! This fun class welcomes students of all skill levels, and as far as classes are concerned, there is no such thing as a pre-requisite for fun.
Q: Do I need to be a club member to take this Decal?
A: No, but there will be a fee that covers everything from course materials to bows and arrows.
Q: Why is there a fee and how does it work?
A: The Archery decal is very special in the sense that it makes available a sport that is not commonly known or accessible to many. Having said that, the equipment used in this class does cost money to replace and maintain, so there will be a small fee simply to make sure we can keep this class going for future students interested in taking it. The fee will be approved by the decal department and collected through the ME department instead of directly by the instructors or facilitators, and it is not meant for profit in any way shape or form.
Q: How much is said fee?
A: Only $10!!!
Q: Do I need my own equpiment?
A: Paying the fee mentioned above means that you can use any of the equipment we rent from the CAL Archery Sports Club and there should be plenty to go around! You do not need anything except your enthusiasm!
Q: Tele-Bears says the course is listed as an ME (Mechanical Engineering) course. Is that supposed to happen?
A: YES! Our course sponsor is a professor in the ME department. That explains why our class is listed under the ME department.
Q: What is the difference between upper and lower division?
A: Typically juniors and seniors take upper-division courses while freshman and sophomores take lower-division courses. It all depends on your unit standing, but just try to go with the most logical choice or whatever works for you.
Q: What if I miss a class?
A: Aside from medical emergency and other urgent unavoidable situations, each archer can only miss a strict number of 2 classes. Missing more than that without a reasonable excuse will mean failure of the course. If you do not think you can keep your absences under 2 classes, please reconsider.
Q: What if I am late?
A: Lateness counts in a similar manner. If you are late (of course you have the ten minutes after the hour to work with) without an excuse (such as I had to walk from a class on Northside right before this class), then we will mark that as a fraction of a class missed out of the 2 total that you are allowed. Perhaps 1/4 or even 1/2 of a class period depending on how late you are. Lateness translates into interrupting any lessons going on and missing certain material, and of course the main point of any Decal is to go to class.
Q: Where can I find homework?
A: We will most likely be trying an online homework system to make it easier on all of us (including the trees). There will be more information about this later.
