About the Course:
This course is for students of any major interested in contemporary American poetry, literary publishing, or learning more about publishing their own poetry in nationally distributed journals.
Berkeley Poetry Review (BPR) is considered the preeminent undergraduate poetry journal in the nation and has been published annually since 1974. It features the creative work of the UC Berkeley community including students, faculty, staff, and alumni as well as prominent poets such as the California Poet Laureate, Al Young, and U.S. Poet Laureates Robert Hass and Robert Pinsky. The course will explore specific topics such as poetry selection and analysis, publicity, marketing, proofreading, and copy editing. Our main goal for the course is to publish our next issue, Issue 40, which will focus on commemorating forty years of BPR, and distribute it in local and national bookstores. In addition, we will be hosting monthly open mic poetry readings for the public, including a multimedia showcase, and maintaining BPR's electronic journal on our website.
