About the Course:
The ASUC Undergraduate/Graduate Mentorship Program (UGMP) DeCal provides an opportunity for undergraduates to obtain individualized guidance from a graduate student. Undergraduate participants will be paired with graduate mentors knowledgeable in similar fields of study, research interests, and extracurricular activities. Undergraduate students will be expected to enroll in and attend a weekly one and a half hour, one-unit DeCal during the spring semester. The class will include guest speakers and panelists directed toward providing undergraduates with information about graduate school. Numerous classes throughout the course will serve as discussion sections for undergraduates to reflect on workshops from previous weeks. To establish and strengthen their relationships, graduate students will attend these sections, providing further guidance for their undergraduate mentees.By the end of this course, undergraduate participants will have an understanding of the graduate school experience. Undergraduates who are interested in gaining knowledge about their academic field of interest, the graduate school process, or future academic goals will benefit from the advice and perspective of their graduate mentor. Not only will the undergraduates learn about the graduate process, but also establish relationships with their mentors, bringing students with similar interests together. It is our hope for the program to enhance the Cal student community’s academic potential, to join the gap between undergraduate and graduate education, and to continue the academic success of this university.
