About the Course:

"We are not trying to solve the world's problems. There can not be a happy ending to the fight between the Raging Gods and mankind. However, even in the midst of hatred and killing, there are things worth living for. A wonderful encounter, or a thing of beauty can still exist." - Miyazaki Hayao.

In the class, we'll put the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki into literary, artistic, social, and historical context through the films (of course), articles, and discussions. We will attempt to understand Miyazaki's films and their relevance to a contemporary world, considering both "How is this relevant for Japan?" as well as "How is this relevant for myself, or for my context of America?"

Film clips in class, full film screenings TBA.
