About the Course:

Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn, the flapper, Rosie the Riveter and more…

A night at the movies with a pleasant group of friends—or an equally pleasant bag of popcorn—has been an American pastime since the early 20th century. While most motion pictures were created for the purpose of entertainment, they also serve as primary sources that portray popular ideas and values of society at the time. Looking at select films and documentaries of the 20th century (from 1915-present), we will explore the changes in the roles of the women who are depicted and discuss how each film is a product of its time. Topics will range from labor issues to sexuality to race relations and more. In addition to analyzing plots and themes, we will also address different film techniques used to convey director’s ideas. How have portrayals of women changed from decade to decade? Do the films give an accurate view of women in history? How valuable are motion pictures and documentaries as sources? These are questions we will be discussing with one another throughout the course. Articles and handouts addressing different films and historical periods will be distributed during class.

How to Enroll:

ATTENTION
ENROLLMENT INFO HAS CHANGED

This course is limited to 40 students. Due to the number of students requesting the CCN before the first day of class, I have already given out 30 spots. I will no longer be e-mailing the control number, so the last 10 places will be saved for students coming on the first day—September 11th. (This date had been pushed back due to Labor Day). If there ends up being more students than spaces, the last spots for enrollment will be decided through lottery. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. See you then.
