Sports Literacy: A Cultural Guide to Baseball and Football
Fall 2008 - American Studies 98/198 - Units: 1
Shortcuts: decal.org/749 decal.org/sports_literacy
More than just the subject of a George Carlin standup routine, baseball and football are the cornerstones of American sport. This course is geared toward sports enthusiasts, casual observers, and those who stomach watching a game. Students will learn about America’s pastime and present time sports, baseball and football respectively. This course will focus on the basic fundamentals, strategies, and famous personages and historical moments in each sport. With this foundation, the course will move to synthesize the sports by comparing and contrasting how different topics effect each, including labor relations, sports contracts and trades, statistics and fantasy sports, and baseball and football in popular culture. Through viewing and analyzing sporting events, reading sports media and literature, and discussing as a group, students will leave the course with the ability to watch a baseball or football game, understand the action, and add their own insightful commentary.Enrollment Info:
Enrollment is limited to 20 students, split between 12 upper and 8 lower divisions. CECs are required for enrollment. If you are interested in enrolling, please attend the first day of class to fill out a survey that will gauge your level of sports knowledge and interest. The instructors are looking to facilitate a group of students that includes a balance of both new and old sports fans. As such a random cross-section of students with interests and knowledge will be drawn from the survey results. Feel free to contact the instructors with any questions you may have about enrollment or the course itself.Course Contact: Calvin_Cohen AT berkeley.edu
