Downstage Left: Creating Sketch Comedy with Improvisation
Fall 2008 - Units: 1
Shortcuts: decal.org/744
Guaranteed to be a course unlike any Decal you've ever experienced!
Do you want to learn how Professional Improvisation Actors, like those at The Groundlings or Second City, remain consistently funny? Curious to find out how to write that perfect sketch comedy scene? This is the place to be!
In this course, students will learn the basic ground rules of short form improv - as taught by The Groundlings in Los Angeles. After three weeks, the class will shift gears and the students will begin writing their own original comedy sketch.
Students will write in pairs for a more enjoyable experience. (If all goes according to plan, it'll be half the work - and twice the laughs.)
After work shopping the scenes in class, students will act in each others sketches, which will culminate in a live performance at the end of the semester.
--> No experience is necessary to enroll. If you have acting or writing experience, great! If not, all we want is for you to give us your best.
*** If you are a student who is thinking about taking this class because you're one unit short of the minimum requirement - look elsewhere. ***
In this class, students want to be here. I promise that you will learn comedy. I have no control over the fact that the course is only one unit.
Downstage Left: Creating Sketch Comedy with Improvisation is a break from your normal strain of Berkeley classes. Come join us for laughs, learning, and something else that starts with the letter "L"!!!
Enrollment Info:
Auditions will take place TUESDAY, SEPT. 9 and THURSDAY, SEPT. 11 from 5-6 in 317 ZELLERBACH.
Audition sign-ups can be found inside the Dwinelle Annex (the little brown cottage located directly behind Dwinelle).
For the audition, I'm looking for a one minute comedic monologue. If it's not completely memorized... you can still show up. Let it be known - if you bring me any material from before 1950 - I will stop you, and throw my shoe at you. We will be learning contemporary, edgy comedy... Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde won't help you here.
The class will meet TUESDAY/ THURSDAY 5-6, starting September 16 in 317 Zellerbach.
If you can only make one day a week, don't bother showing up. There is a ton of collaboration and team building that will occur - so we need you there.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me.
