About the Course:

The goal of this DeCal course is to provide undergraduate students with more information as well as inspiration in the field of research.  We hope that through this course you will not only learn more about the exciting cutting-edge research that is currently taking place in your own campus, but get a general understanding of what research is and how you can be apart of it.  Through intriguing lectures from professors across the campus in all colleges, interactive discussion sections, as well as assignments that develop the basic research skills.   We hope that this class will expand your understanding of what research is, captivate and motivate you to get more involved in the research that is going on, and also give you the necessary tools and resources to obtain a research position.
The decal course will consist of lectures from guest professors from all different educational fields who will present about their own research that they are currently working on.  There will also be field trips to off-campus sites during the semester to see and learn more about the research occuring around UC Berkeley. After the lecture, there will be a 30 min. discussion section, where students are encouraged to actively participate in discussion with a panel of members related to the topic of the lecture.  All students are required to attend 2 discussion sections of their choice and turn in a related writing assignment.  Also, there will be some lectures where we will focus on professional development, with information on basic research skills and the resources to find a research position with the help of the Undergraduate Research Apprentices Program (URAP).
