About the Course:
If you decide to ignore Lemony Snicket's advice and forgo stories of ponies and the Littlest Elf for the troubling tale of the Baudelaires, then you might as well get school credit for it.
Besides being subjected to such horrors as an evil Count terrorizing young intelligent children and, say, coconut cake, we will explore the use of literature as a vehicle for educating youths. We will also discuss the virtues of literacy and the various literary allusions sprinkled throughout the series, which by large accounts for the appeal of this children's series to young adults.
We will be reading all thirteen books of A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window, The Miserable Mill, The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital, The Carnivorous Carnival, The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End. Don't be daunted by the quantity of books - they are children's books and fairly quick reads compared to those heavy textbooks of yours. Additional readings, including poems and short stories, will be passed out in class.
How to Enroll:
Attend the first day of class! CCNs will be distributed in class Thursday January 31.
No prior knowledge of A Series of Unfortunate Events is required, just an open mind and a love of books.
