This course is for students of any major who wish to learn more about contemporary American poetry, literary publishing in poetry, or how to publish their own poetry in nationally distributed journals. The Berkeley Poetry Review is considered the preeminent undergraduate poetry journal in the nation and is distributed internationally. The journal, which is produced annually, features the creative work of the UC Berkeley community including students, faculty, staff, and alumni as well as prominent poets such as the California Poet Laureate, Al Young, and U.S. Poet Laureates, Robert Hass and Robert Pinsky. The course will explore specific topics such as poetry selection, editing, layout, proofing and copyediting, as well as marketing, publicity, and fundraising. Our main goal for the course is to publish our next issue, Number 39 which will focus on poetry in translation and distribute it in bookstores throughout the East Bay. In addition, we will be hosting open mic poetry readings for the public, and creating a multimedia digital showcase of poets performing their own work (to be displayed on our website). This semester there are also new leadership positions available. Please e-mail us for more information.
