About the Course:
The American Civil Liberties Union’s central purpose is to protect the individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution to every person in America. ACLU de-cal will aim to educate students about the history of the civil liberties issues including some of the ACLU's most famous legal battles such as Japanese-American internment during WWII, the desegregation struggle of the Civil Rights era, contemporary women's rights, and numerous free speech issues. The de-cal will also focus on contemporary civil liberties issues such as post 9/11 legislation, privacy issues, racial profiling, students’ rights, and many more current topics. In order to best inform students about civil liberties, we will have guest speakers from the ACLU of Northern California and other organizations to lecture on a particular civil liberties issue. Because the ACLU is nonpartisan, we will make sure to educate students on both sides of the issue by providing a discussion period after the lectures that will include a Q & A session, as well as time for debate about the specific issue.
The ACLU de-cal will provide students with a strong grasp of the basic rights guaranteed to all individuals under the Constitution. Through lectures, films, and discussion, students will have a solid sense of both the historical and contemporary civil liberties issues. They will learn about the Japanese American internment, the Civil Rights Movement, the Free Speech Movement, as well as many other important historical civil rights struggles. Students will learn both sides of many civil liberties issues by engaging in discussion and debate with lecturers and their fellow classmates. By the end of the course, students should be able to critically examine and understand the historical and contemporary civil liberties issues. How to Enroll:
