About the Course:
The aim of this course is to understand the phenomenon that is genocide by analyzing possible causes, shared characteristics of instances of genocide, international response and attempts at post-genocide reconciliation. The start of the course will explore the history of the word “genocide” beginning with the Holocaust. After analyzing generalities associated with the term “genocide”, we will apply them to specific case studies. The main case studies shall include but will not be limited to: the Holocaust, Armenia, Rwanda, Cambodia and the Former Yugoslavia. We will then go on to focus on the discrepancies that exist in defining “genocide” and how these different interpretations contribute to the problem of accountability. The goal is to find a common thread throughout different occurrences of genocide to see if there are any possible preventative measures. The class will conclude by attempting to reconcile the atrocities of genocide.Previous guest speakers: Armenian Student Association, Ambassador Theogene Rudasingwa (Former Rwandan Ambassador to the United States), David Seaborg, Professor Malcolm Potts (Public Health), Professor Darren Zook (Political Science) and S.T.A.N.D.
The course also incorporates documentaries and major films.
