About the Course:

This course, now in its second semester, is an illuminating colloquium primarily featuring university administrators that explores academic policy and campus decision-making on a level that most students never get the opportunity to be exposed to.

While Governance @ Cal is intended to increase the accountability and knowledge of students who serve as representatives to Academic Senate and Campus Administrative committees, all students are welcome and encouraged to enroll and gain insight on campus activities and functioning. This simple, straightforward course seeks to create a forum of information and discussion concering policy and UC Berkeley's unique operating system of shared governance in order to enable students and committee representatives to share their experiences and perspectives and learn about their school and campus community.

You're invited to join this course and learn directly from a diverse array of speakers addressing their administrative/policy units or roles through presentations, question-and-answer sessions and open discussion on a weekly basis. We've discussed a wide range of issues from the $500 million BP Deal to student fees, faculty tenure to student representation and participation...and much more! If you wish to become a more knowledgeable Berkeley student, learn about what's going on throughout our vast campus and find out how the school works, take this course.

FYI: Our guest lecturers from last semester: Jonathan Poullard (Dean of Students), Scott Biddy (Vice Chancellor of University Relations), Beth Burnside (Vice Chancellor for Research), Cathy Koshland (Vice Provost, Academic Planning and Facilities), Christina Maslach (Vice Provost, Undergraduate Education), Sheldon Zedeck (Vice Provost, Academic Affairs & Facutly Welfare), William Drummond (Chair of the Academic Senate, Berkeley Division), Nadesan Permaul (Director, ASUC Auxiliary), Irene Hegarty (Director, UC Berkeley Community Relations) Oiyan Poon (former UCSA president), Jason Dixson (former ASUC Academic Affairs Vice President) and Danny Montes (current ASUC External Affairs Vice President).
