''Talkin' Tobacco''
Fall 2007 - Sociology 98/198 - Units: 3
Shortcuts: decal.org/442
The subject matter is tobacco-- or more specifically, a holistic understanding of tobacco, not just the adverse affects of cigarettes on human health which I'm sure we've all heard plenty about (but not enough!)! The course content will expose students to a variety of tobacco-related topics, including hookahs, vulnerable populations, health disparities, tobacco industry advertising, Photovoice and grassroots social activism, and ecology.
Students will be expected to analyze how the tobacoo industry has impacted society from multiple angles, whether it's by sponsoring research at UC or by targeting specific populations like young adults. The key learning outcomes of the courses are for students to understand tobacco not just from a health perspective, but from political, ethical, psychological, economic, historical, racial, and cultural perspectives as well. Students will be expected to participate in community-based projects and propose solutions to cocunter the tobacco industry's impact on society.
We will meet for two hours each week for lecture, perhaps a film or two, in-class discussions, and guest speakers (both individual and panels). There are two main assignments for the course. Every week students will be expected to complete a one-paragraph response in relation to readings and in-class material. Weekly prompts are worth 20% of the grade. In addition, student are to engage in a group project on social advocacy. The group service-learning project, which involves 2-4 hrs of service each week and culminates in an in-class presentation and 5-6pg write-up, is worth 50% of the grade. The final 30% is for attendance, participation in field activities, and in-class participation.
