About the Course:

Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) is an organization dedicated to support grassroots development in South America, Africa, and India. Beginning in 1995 FSD embarked on their mission to provide volunteer opportunities for those who are interested in grassroots development. Throughout the past few years they have given students the opportunity to create service learning projects in order to provide opportunities to obtain hands on experience with issues concerning localized development. During the service learning trip volunteers will gain a greater understanding of the countries current issues, politics, history, culture, and daily life. This semester long course will prepare students for the trip. Through student participation and engaged discussions, we intend to provide students with a broad overview of current issues in Peru in preparation for the study tour and service trip focusing on microfinance, education, and environmental issues. Guest speakers, student panels, group presentations, and in-class discussions will allow students to take a more in-depth look at a topic of interest. Not only will we be exploring issues concerning the development of Peru, but in the conclusion of the course we will also have a better understanding of issues concerning international development as a whole.
