Amusing Ourselves to Death: The Desensitizing Effects of the Media
About the Course:
The purpose of this decal is to inform and educate students about the media’s desensitizing effects on their views of men, women, children, sex and violence. By examining media content and different forms of media, ranging from advertisements, TV, magazines, movies, music and video games, we will examine how the media manipulates and distorts our attitudes, emotions and values.
We will view Disney movies, multi-player video games like Doom, and popular advertisements, movies, songs and magazines to build this case. Each week a visual element and activities will be used to facilitate class discussion and educate students about how to deal with the media’s covert attempt to “amuse us to death” by using explicit and implicit messages that attempt to shape societal values.
On completion of this class, students should be able to:
•Discover how the media desensitizes its viewers
•Identify how viewers are susceptible to the media’s deceptive messages
•Learn how to make educated choices about consuming media
