About the Course:

If you think Chinese films are all about martial arts, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li, think again. Despite having enjoyed a significant amount of commercial success, most well-known Chinese-language films in the United States have tended to focus on certain genres and do not represent the multi-faceted industry as a whole.  This course introduces students to a wide variety of films from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Based on a similar course offered at Peking University in China, this course places focus on screening, understanding and analyzing the movies that brought Chinese cinema to the world's attention. Students will learn about the different aspects and nuances of Chinese cinema through film screenings, discussions, readings, lectures, and homework assignments. In addition, students will have the opportunity to develop skills for film analysis.

No prior knowledge or language skills are required. All students are welcome to join the class.

How to Enroll:

Classes begin in the second week of instruction.  Enrollment is limited to 20 lower division and 20 upper divisions students.  Course control numbers may be given on the first day of class, depending on class size.
