Logging Sports: The Art of Cutting Trees
About the Course:
Logging is the core of modern society. From the time of pioneers to today’s mechanized sawmills, logging has been the foundation on which our society is built. Without the men and women who manage our forests, access to the timber in our houses, the water we drink, and the air we breathe would not be possible.
The collegiate and professional logging sports circuit serves as a reminder of the rich history behind the logging industry and livelihood of the backbone of our society. This course will introduce students to the little known world of logging and, especially, lumberjack sports competition. We will look at the importance of logging throughout history by learning both modern and historic techniques. Students will have the opportunity to practice and even compete with the UC Berkeley Logging Sports Team, to reinforce the techniques they learn in class.
